Multiple shootings close streets east of Downtown Colorado Springs

One person is dead and multiple areas are closed off after a shooting in Colorado Springs Saturday morning.

A police shootout in downtown Colorado Springs ended when the suspect was hit by an officer's bullet. Garrett said officers found one person dead in the home.

Another witness, who said he lives on the east side of Wahsatch Avenue told reporters that he was taking his dog out around 9 a.m. when he saw police shoot the suspect.

Officers found a suspect near the Prospect Street location, Buckley said, and the suspect began to fire shots at police. The video was taken after the suspect was shot by officers.

The condition of the suspect is not known. A witness told News5 the suspect had a rifle.

The El Paso County Sheriff's Office has taken over the investigation into the officer-involved shooting, due to it involving Springs officers.

Nicks said the suspect was darting between fast-food restaurants on Wahsatch as he tried to escape officers.

The 21-year-old said the shooter made it west of El Paso Street then suddenly turned to his left and fired off more shots. Those intersections could be blocked off for the next 8-10 hours, police said. No details were available on the other victims or how they died. Colorado Springs police are handling the rest of the investigation, Kirby said. "The officers confronted that individual, that individual actively fired at the officers who were responding and the officers returned fire".

"This covers a very large area of a few major streets in Colorado Springs", Buckley said, adding that many would be closed for most of the day. You can expect closures on Platte from Corona to Weber; Wahsatch from Kiowa to Boulder and the 200 block of North Prospect. Prospect Street is shut down from Bijou Street to Platte Avenue.
